Point in canon: Post GS3
Character Background and Personality:

When Phoenix was a kid, he was accused of stealing Miles Edgeworth's money. Edgeworth defended him and complained that he hadn't received a fair trial, and Larry Butz agreed. They then became inseparable as friends-- until Miles suddenly disappeared from school. Unfortunately, Larry remained friends with Phoenix for forever. Phoenix wrote letters for years, hoping Miles would get them. When Phoenix was of age, he enrolled into drama school, but he soon became fixated with becoming a lawyer because he'd found that Miles was the 'Demon Prosecutor'. He wanted to find out what happened to Miles and if he could save him from himself. It was in the court room's library that he met his first girlfriend, Dahlia Hawthorne. Dahlia is a crazy psycho bitch who tried to kill him several times and was basically the worst girlfriend ever. Iris pretended to be Dahlia to get some decisive evidence in the shape of a necklace back (as she'd given it to him as a 'present of their love'). Phoenix was oblivious and refused to give the necklace back, and so Dahlia decided to go crazy psycho on him and tries to kill him without him knowing.

Phoenix becomes a lawyer. Phoenix wins everything. Mia dies. Phoenix emos and finds her murderer and kicks his ass to jail. Phoenix comes up against Miles Edgeworth. Phoenix wins. Edgeworth has unnecessary feelings and tells Phoenix to GTFO. Phoenix is confused and sad. Edgeworth's accused of murder. Phoenix risks career to defend him. Phoenix found Edgeworth's mentor to be the murderer of Edgeworth's dad, Gregory. Also, Gant. Edgeworth chose death. Phoenix became a pissed girlfriend and refused to mention Edgeworth's name ever because HE ABANDONED HIM AGAIN. More cases happen. SURPRISE, Edgeworth isn't dead, he just decided he needed to make a dramatic exit and start anew in like France or somewhere because apparently his friends don't need to know he's alive. Phoenix is relieved and a little pissed, but mostly relieved. More things happen.

Godot shoots his lasers and Phoenix goes 'wat'. Then he finds out who Godot actually is and shit starts making sense. Then everything gets turned upside down when Phoenix finds out Iris was his girlfriend and Dahlia was... not. Phoenix is confused and doesn't really know if he has unnecessary feelings for Iris or not, despite her totally having the hots for him.
(TL;DR version here: Whooosh. )

----------

Phoenix is a curious person, and believes in helping those who can't help themselves. He's kind hearted, and definitely means well. On the surface, Phoenix is a nice, simple and well-rounded guy. He's friendly to most anyone, loyal to all his friends and he’s more often than not ready to help anyone and everyone out. He’s a little naïve at first, trusting his clients without so much of a double take, and sometimes he tends to jump to the wrong conclusions.

To himself, Phoenix is a very sarcastic person. He always has something to say, no matter what the situation is, and although he may not say it out loud, you can bet he’s thinking something cynical. As the games go on, he slowly loses sight of his moral compass, and he becomes slightly jaded. Although his heart is still in the right place, experience tells him that not everyone is what they seem.

It's often suggested that Phoenix is a bad liar-- he becomes nervous and stutters inaudibly when put on the spot about something that isn't necessarily true. He's very imaginative, and can think up the oddest things when pressured into a situation he doesn't know the outcome of (or why). When he’s nervous or needs time to think, he cleans the bathroom (usually the toilet) and when he’s hit rock bottom, he usually needs someone else to pull him back up. He has momentary spouts of weakness, but it’s his ability to pick himself up and look at things from a whole new angle that gets him through the toughest of situations.

His eagerness to set things right in the world definitely plays a huge part in who he is, as he’s constantly fighting for the greater good. He's driven, and he's happy to put anything on the line to make sure his client gets that 'not guilty' verdict. He's good at figuring out even the oddest of puzzles, and he'll keep at it until he figures out everything there is to figure out. He’s very smart, although he has the ability to put his foot in his mouth when he speaks without thinking. He puts on a good show in the courtroom, using his dramatic background as a starting point and often acts oblivious to things that he's very aware of. He's very watchful of those around him, taking in all his surroundings constantly because he believes that anything and everything could be a potential clue.

Phoenix is so very dependent on his friends; so much so that whenever he loses one of them it hits home very hard. With always searching for the good in people, he sometimes misses the bad and that ultimately becomes the reason he veers onto mistrusting those he meets. Once relying on first impressions, Phoenix has now learned the hard way that people can and will lie for personal gain.

Sexual Orientation:
Bisexual, leaning towards straight. There's canon evidence that obviously supports him being straight, what with Iris and Dahlia, and beyond that you can take things into interpretation. For instance, When Miles suddenly disappeared, Phoenix spent the next 15 years of his life searching for any leads on where he might be. He even gave up his career in the arts to become a lawyer once he discovered Edgeworth had become known for forging evidence and tampering with witness statements. He intended to discover just why people had been calling him the Demon Prosecutor and hoped that they were all baseless rumors.

After becoming a lawyer, it's stated several times that Phoenix wished to 'save him'. Some may take it as hero worship, and others may take it as a crush. Personally, I take it as both, though Phoenix may not be aware he has any feelings for him beyond those of normal friendship. He obviously cares a lot for the man, willing to risk his career and more just to help him out. Either way, he hasn't bothered to truly explore the option of being anything more than Edgeworth's friend at this point.

Phoenix ties sex and love together so completely that it will be hard for him to have sex with complete strangers at first. Whilst he obviously thinks about sex as much as a normal 26 year old male would, he doesn't exactly act on every desire. So although he's bisexual, he's only ever been with women and he's barely admitted to himself that he's bisexual, and if he has, he's never told anyone. He's a very private person, and when asked, would definitely deflect the answer.

Also, this: (Phoenix: I feel like words alone aren't enough here...)

Sample Post:

He felt as though he'd slept for days. The odd buzzing in his head gave him a headache, and when he tried to move, his limbs were heavy and stiff. He was lying on something hard yet smooth to the tough; it wasn't a bed, from what he could gather. Slowly, bright blue eyes opened and took in his surroundings at a squint. He'd never seen a room like it; it was cold, grey and unfeeling. It felt like a doctors office, only now that he was slightly more awake, he could feel a feeling of something not being quite right. He let his eyes sweep over the odd enclosure he'd found himself in, still too groggy to really sit up and do much else.

It was the voice in his head that startled him the most. He knew it wasn't his voice, because his voice just wasn't that low-- and although it was a voice he'd never heard, he somehow knew it was true. He knew that this was Micro-Metropolis, and he knew that he'd been selected for some experiments that were 'exciting and stimulating', whatever that meant.

His mind was still foggy with the details, but he had a vague idea of what those 'experiments' meant, and judging by the unease he felt in the pit of his stomach, his guess wasn't too far off.
